When making our Valentines boxes to mail to family this year, we decided to include a few homemade goodies. Cookies are always a favorite and we decided something chocolate covered would make a nice addition. We considered making chocolate covered nut clusters, but when I found a big barrel of organic spelt mini pretzels at Costco, we decided Chocolate Covered Pretzels were meant to be.
We used Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Chips and simply melted them over a double boiler (glass bowl over a pot of simmering water) on the stove, but they could also be melted in a microwave. After the chocolate is all ooey gooey, simply hand dip a pretzel into the warm melty chocolate and place on wax paper to set.
I started by holding a pretzel at the side and dipping half of the pretzel into the melted chocolate. Then I tried holding the bottom of the pretzel and dipping just the top. We preferred the look of the pretzels dipped by holding the bottom. This method was so fast and easy compared to covering entire pretzels in chocolate.
To fancy up our chocolate covered pretzels, we melted white chocolate chips in an attempt to add drizzles across the top of the pretzels. We bought Ghirardelli white chocolate chips to melt as they did not have partially hydrogenated ingredients, but they just didn’t melt well enough to drizzle (it was more like glops than thin drizzles). The milk and semi-sweet dark chocolate would have worked for drizzling, but we decided to just sprinkle a few pretzels with cute valentines themed sprinkles, sugars, and toppings instead. We used the melted white chocolate to dip more pretzels and changed our plan to make three varieties of chocolate covered pretzels: milk chocolate, semi-sweet dark chocolate, and a few white chocolate covered pretzels. It was fun to have a variety of chocolate covered pretzels to include in our gift boxes, but my favorite hands down was the milk chocolate covered pretzels. Love that classic salty chocolatey crunch!
It was quick and super easy (too easy really) to make homemade Chocolate Covered Pretzels! There will definitely be more chocolate covered adventures around here. All I can say is watch out, anything that is not nailed down may get dipped in chocolate...too much fun!
