When we lived in Hawaii, we learned how to make these fun fruit boats at a demonstration at The Dole Plantation. I love serving pineapple and melon boats with toothpicks, since they are easy for guests to enjoy and this presentation uses the fruit’s own shell for serving bowls. Less dishes to clean is always a bonus!
All you need to do is cut the pineapples and melons into wedges or boats. For example, a pineapple is cut into quarters making 4 boats. Stand each pineapple boat on end to cut the tough center away. Carefully use a knife to separate the fruit from the shell. It helps to have a slightly flexible knife. They actually sold special knifes for this at Dole, but I found a cheapy steak knife that I bought ages ago at Walmart works just fine for this job. Then make straight cuts across the fruit, cutting it into individual pieces (careful not to cut the shell). Push every other piece out for a fun presentation and put a toothpick in each piece of fruit to make it easy for guests to transfer to their plate.
We served several varieties of fruit boats: pineapple, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon boats at our baby shower. They are a fun and easy way to serve fresh fruit.
